Affordable higher education is key to social mobility, but the middle class is beginning to be priced out of college.
But today, states have significantly cut back the amount of funding for public universities or allowed their contributions to stagnate. Now, students and families pick up a much greater share of tuition and fees, causing tuition to skyrocket for families all across the country.
With states facing huge fiscal issues, many will likely continue to cut funding to universities in the coming years. We cannot let that happen, and the federal government needs to provide incentives for states to continue funding higher education. We cannot afford to saddle students and their families with debt that will hurt our economy.
